Yarn Marker: you can use a yarn marker to mark the first and last stitch for reference. You will want to change the yarn marker with each round. This is optional if you have trouble finding the beginning of the round. I use yarn markers and find they save time in keeping the project accurate.
Round 3: Chain 1, work a stitch combo(1SC, 2DC) in the second double crochet of each set around, join with a slip stitch to the beginning single crochet. slip stitch to the second double crochet (12 stitch combo total)

Earflaps
Row 1-2: Work 4 stitch combo's across, turn, no chain 1 on the turn. (work in the middle stitch of each combo of stitches)
Row 3: This will be a decrease row reducing down to 3 stitch combo's. Work a single crochet in the middle stitch. Work a double crochet decrease, starting in the same stitch, working the second part in the middle double crochet of the next combo. Work one more double crochet in the same stitch as the stitch the decrease was completed in. There will be an extra stitch but it is still a decrease. The two remaining stitches will be individual. turn.
Row 4: Work 3 stitch combo across. Work in the stitch close to the edge when you get to the final combo, which is working in the decrease made on row 3.
The sides are not going to be very even or neat. We will work a single crochet edging upon completion, which will even up the earflaps.
Row 5-6: Work 3 stitch combo across. Cut the yarn and sew in the tail.
Skip 3 stitch combo's and attach the yarn in the next for the second earflap. The 3 left open is the back of the cap.
Work a single crochet edging around the cap.
You will knot, secure and sew in any remaining tails.
