Free Quilled Valentine Heart Pattern

I wanted to try something that is different, yet in some cosmic way part of my everyday life. Just for you and Valentine's Day, this is an unconventional spin on the traditional heart, as inspired by a design on my bedspread (thus part of my everyday life). I actually used this on a scrapbook page.

Heart
  • 2 - 6 in ( cm) loose coil
Non-traditional Heart Shape

  • 1 - 12 in ( cm) strip Fold Strip in half

  • Curl approximately 1/2 in ( cm) of each end outward

Creating the Heart shape

  • Glue the loose coils to the strip to create the curved upper heart (you must look closely at the photo)

  • Do not glue the curled ends until you complete the next step

  • 1 - 4 in ( cm) - V-Scroll shape

  • 1 - 6 in ( cm) - V-scroll shape

  • Place the 6 in ( cm) inside the 4 in ( cm) strip and glue the ends together

  • Now glue the curled ends to the pointed end of the V-scrolls

Accent the heart

  • 1 - 4 in ( cm) teardrop

  • 1 - 3 in ( cm) teardrop1 - 2 in ( cm) tight roll

Arrange as shown

Remember, inspiration can some from anywhere, all you have to do is be open to it
I used this heart on a Christmas scrapbook page I was making

These colors would work equally well for Christmas or Valentines or your Anniversary

Enjoy!

Free Quilling Snowflake Card Pattern

quilled snowflake ornament card

Here it is, the first quilling pattern of 2009! This is a quilled snowflake ornament that is attached to a card. This card doubles as an ornament for a really special treat for the recipient.

quilled snowflake ornament

Let's begin with the snowflake ornament measurements:
  • 1 - 12 inch (30.5 cm) White Tight Roll for the center of the snowflake

  • 5 - 3 inch (7.6 cm) Blue Tight Roll (will go around the center tight roll)

  • 5 - 6 inch (15.2 cm) White Teardrop (this will alternate with the blue tight roll around the center tight roll. The point of the teardrop will be glued to the center tight roll. See photo for placement)

  • 5 - 6 inch (15.2 cm) Blue Tight Roll (will be glued to the top / rounded portion of the white teardrop)

  • 5 - 6 inch (15.2 cm) White Teardrop (will be glued to the blue tight roll along the rounded end)

To make this snowflake sparkle, I used a glitter glue on both the front and back of the snowflake. I applied the glitter to one side at a time and allowed it to dry before turning it over and glittering the opposite side.

All that is left is the find a jump ring and attach it to one of your points and then tie a string to complete the ornament.

Making the Card

  • Start with Blue cardstock (this is a quarter fold size card)

  • Using various sizes of snowflake stamps, stamp snowflakes on card. I used the Tsukineko Silver which gives the card a glittering look.

  • Tear a piece of white glitter paper and attach to bottom of the card to give the appearance of snow.

  • Stamp "Merry Christmas" or "Let it Snow" or some other sentiment.

  • Apply snowflake and snowman punches (or brads if you have them) to give the card a layered look.

  • Attach the snowflake ornament from above and you are finished.

There you have it. A cute snowflake ornament and card, the winter theme can be used for any occasion during the winter months.

Happy New Year 2009

quilled snowman and birdhouse ornament

Happy New Year! Can you believe that 2008 has come and gone and today is the first day of 2009? Neither can I.

Have you made any New Year's resolutions? I don't typically make an official list or anything that I post and mark off what I've done. I am a list maker by nature, so this is just an addendum to the numerous lists that I have going at any given time.

A friend of mine, Bronwyn, posed a question about any quilling plans for 2009, here is my response:

... I didn't get to do as much quilling as I wanted in 2008, so one of my goals is to try to quill more in 2009. Here are some of my ideas for 2009:

  • I love birds, so I'd like to quill some birds. I can promise that this year I will have a Toucan and a Folk Art Bird pattern (these are pretty detailed), and a quick little peacock pattern that will be easy to pull together quickly.

  • If I can, maybe I can get one of my hummingbird ideas into a pattern (I have quilled a few different hummingbirds over the years, so it will be a matter of sitting down and writing down the instructions) and I would love to get around to quilling one of the bald eagle ideas I have (this is definitely more of a wish list at the moment).

  • Ballet Slippers for ballet recitals in our Spring-time. I made a pattern for ballet slippers a few years ago and have only made them and given them away as gifts so far. The term pattern is a bit loose, I have never written down the exact instructions, I more quill from memory. My niece is doing ballet now, so I want to make some for her (and maybe for some in her class too?)

  • Some ornaments - things like snowflakes and these little birdhouses that I did this year for Christmas that I really liked. The snowflake pattern will be the first pattern of the New Year!

  • I would like to do some pattern ideas to celebrate a First Holy Communion or Confirmation.

  • I think this year I will finally publish instructions for doing husking. I like to do husking and make up my own designs, but I would like to share a husked butterfly (actually, I use some husking in some of my hummingbird designs so this will be a good idea). Husking will then round out most of the different types of quilling that people do.

  • Roses - I can't believe I forgot about roses. When I first started quilling, I did a lot of these flowers that I called a wild rose. I have been using them a lot lately, so I will share those as well as instructions for the folded rose.

For those of you who will be, or plan to be in the Tampa, Florida area on May 1 - 3, 2009 perhaps you can join in the North American Quilling Guild's Quilling Conference (NAQGCON)? This is a great time if you can make it. I am planning to attend and teach a class with a friend of mine, Marion (she is going to teach Iris Folding and I am going to teach a folded rose pattern to accompany her design).

Feel free to share in the comments your resolutions or thoughts or suggestions about things you would like me to try to get to in 2009.

Hugs and Happy Quilling!

Free Winter and Christmas Quilling Patterns

Wow! Can you believe how many patterns I have posted on this site? I know that I can't.

In an effort to make life easier for all of us, I am going to try to simplify the pattern lists for everyone. I have found many patterns along the way that I did not have a link to, so this exercise has definitely been worthwhile.

Please find a list of patterns related to Winter and Christmas. Each of these patterns would be the perfect embellishment for a card, scrapbook page, or framed art. Contact me if you have questions:

Trees and/or Christmas Trees (any of these patterns can be modified to be something other than a Christmas tree)
  • Loose Coil Christmas Tree - very easy Christmas Tree design using loose coils (not glued), can be done by children and adults alike.
  • Scroll Christmas Tree - I love the look of this tree. It is made using S-scrolls, a Heart-T-Scroll, double scrolls and kissing s-scrolls. This project will be available for a limited time.
  • Triangle Christmas Tree - basic design, using triangle shaped coils to make trees.
  • Spreuer Christmas Tree - a very clean, basic Spreuer tree with lights and a star on top
Winter and Christmas Patterns:

  • Birdhouse of Love - combines paper piecing with quilling to create a one-of-a-kind winter white and green birdhouse.
  • Winter Wreath - in the spirit of Advent, I have created a wreath to share.
  • Lovebird Birdhouse - This one has a new design of mine, my S-scroll love birds, check them out.
  • Heart throb Snowman - This guy is all dressed up and ready for a night on the town.
  • Gilded Poinsettia - this gilded paper makes this poinsettia breath taking.
  • Poinsettia - a traditional poinsettia with a fringed flower center.
  • Fancy Ornament - his is a small ornament for your scrapbook Christmas layout, or Christmas cards, or possibly for your tree.
  • Christmas Angel - This Angel is red and green and has curly hair. She also wears her heart on her sleeve. You can use this basic pattern for so many things including a baby announcement or any religious event.
  • Christmas Cross - A sweet Christmas cross with a flower in the center. This is a traditional cross shape in a non-traditional spreuer shape.
  • Snowflake Christmas Card - 5-point blue and white snowflake ornament that is attached to a stamped card.
